Probably Stolen demo: availability and save transfer

Why the Probably Stolen demo was retired at 1.0, whether demo saves transfer, and what the developer says about old mods and fresh starts.

Coverage: 1.0 launch

The quick answer

The developer said the demo would be retired when 1.0 launched. Demo saves are compatible, but a fresh game is recommended to avoid potential bugs; demo mods may not work with the full release.

Why can I find a demo page but not a download?

A store page, an old trailer and a working download are different things. The developer’s launch notice says the demo would no longer be available after the full 1.0 release.

That explains why older search results can still mention a demo even when the current store no longer offers it. Use the full game’s current Steam page as your starting point. Do not assume an unofficial download is an authorized replacement.

Does progress from the demo carry over?

The developer says demo saves are compatible with the full game, while recommending a fresh start to avoid possible bugs.

That is a qualified “yes,” not a promise that every old save and every modification will behave perfectly. If you want to continue, keep the original save until you have opened the full game and confirmed the state you expected.

If you want the least complicated start, the developer’s recommendation is a new game. Name your saves clearly so an older demo run cannot be mistaken for your current playthrough.

What about mods made for the demo?

The same launch notice warns that demo mods may not be compatible with the main game. Save compatibility and mod compatibility are separate questions.

Before reusing a mod, look for an explicit statement that its current version supports the full release. If the page only describes the demo, do not treat that silence as confirmation.

A short transition checklist

  1. Install or update the full game from its official store listing.
  2. Keep the original demo save until your preferred approach is working.
  3. Decide between continuing the compatible save and the developer-recommended fresh start.
  4. Check each mod’s stated version rather than restoring an entire demo-era setup automatically.
  5. If a problem persists, record the full game’s version and whether you used an old save or mod when reporting it.

These precautions are general migration advice. We have not independently tested every possible demo-save state.
