The quick answer
In 1.0, every fish can be caught in every body of water. Match your bait tier and rod to the fish you want; an older biome-specific location guide is no longer the right starting point.

Start with the rule that changed
Keen Games changed the fishing pool for 1.0: location no longer separates the fish species you can catch. Bait chiefly attracts fish of its own tier, and the rod must be capable of handling the catch. Rare and epic fish also received improved catch chances.
That makes a failed fishing trip a gear-and-bait question before it becomes a map question. Moving between distant lakes while keeping the same unsuitable setup is unlikely to address the underlying mismatch.
Prepare a fishing session
- Check which version an older guide describes. Wake of the Water introduced fishing before the 1.0 rebalance.
- Inspect your bait tier and the rod you can currently craft.
- Change the setup deliberately, then compare catches. Avoid changing several variables at once if you are trying to understand the result.
The original fishing update introduced a basic rod through personal crafting and better fishing equipment through the Huntress, Athalan Skree. Use that as a starting point for equipment access; use the newer 1.0 rules for choosing where to fish.
Choosing a fishing spot
Every body of water shares the same fish pool in 1.0. Choose a convenient spot, then adjust your bait and rod for the fish you want. A suitable setup improves your chances; it does not guarantee a particular catch on each cast.
