The quick answer
Windows saves are under %LOCALAPPDATA%/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames. Copy the save folder somewhere separate before switching to Experimental.

Find your local saves
Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\FactoryGame\Saved\SaveGames into Windows File Explorer’s address bar. Coffee Stain recommends keeping separate copies, particularly when cloud saves are involved.
Make a useful backup
Our suggested workflow is to close the game, copy the folder into a dated backup directory, and label which branch you were playing. Keep the original files in place. A folder named for the date and branch is easier to identify later than several copies called “new save.”
Do this before experimenting, not after discovering that you want to return to an earlier state. A synchronized copy and a deliberately preserved earlier copy serve different purposes.
Switch branches deliberately
On Steam, Experimental is selected through the game’s Properties and Betas settings. On Epic, the experimental build is listed separately. The developer describes it as a place to test features before they reach the main branch.
A backup does not guarantee that a save from a newer build will load in an older one. Preserve the pre-switch copy for that reason.
For a factory shared with console friends, also review crossplay and host-platform limits before changing the group’s setup.
