The quick answer
You can keep playing an old save. New biome generation works properly in unexplored areas; Iron Gate recommends a fresh start for the best experience.

Check exploration before deciding
The update does not require you to abandon an existing save. The important limitation is terrain generation in places already explored. If you visited the far north before 1.0, do not assume that area will be rebuilt as the new Deep North.
Our decision guide:
| Your priority | Sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| Preserve a long-running settlement | Inspect the existing world and its exploration history |
| Experience the new progression from the beginning | Start a fresh world |
| Avoid uncertainty about previously explored terrain | Prefer a new world rather than assuming old terrain will change |
Keep the original save whichever option you choose. Starting again does not need to become a decision to delete years of building.
Achievements begin tracking at 1.0
Past actions are not automatically counted as if they happened after the update. The official example is a boss kill: an old victory may need repeating for its achievement.
This is a separate concern from terrain compatibility. An old world can remain playable while an achievement still needs a new qualifying action. If friends are joining from new platforms, also check crossplay and save-sync limits.
