The quick answer
Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across its platforms, including PS5 and Switch 2. Automatic cross-platform save syncing is limited to Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version.

Playing together is not moving your save
Iron Gate lists PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for 1.0 and confirms crossplay across platforms. Sessions support 1–10 players.
That answers whether friends on different devices can share a session. It does not mean a character or world automatically follows the same person between every storefront.
Plan around the save-sync exception
The official cross-platform progression exception is Xbox to the Microsoft Store version on PC. The FAQ does not promise equivalent automatic syncing for Steam, PlayStation or Switch 2.
Before changing hardware, write down two separate decisions: which platform owns your existing progress, and which platform will host the group’s world. If your plan depends on automatic syncing outside the documented pair, revise it before making a purchase for that purpose.
Returning to an Early Access world
A platform change and a world update are also different questions. If your concern is whether the Deep North will appear in a long-running world, read the old-world guide. Crossplay support cannot regenerate terrain you have already explored.
