The quick answer
In 1.0, Content farm animals need two needs met and supply one daily resource; Happy animals need four and supply three. Petting a Happy animal also triggers an immediate resource drop once per day. Breeding unlocks through Diane’s questline.

Find eggs without clearing an entire region first
Normal eggs can spawn each day near Animal Nests, even before the region is restored. Search around nests rather than assuming you must first finish every cleanup task. The updated locations include Grassland, Canyon and Mountain areas, and nearby wild animals help identify where a nest is.
Feeding a wild animal now gives its animal resource rather than a random regional resource. It also has a 5% chance to drop an egg of its species. That is a chance per feeding described by the update, not a guarantee after twenty feeds. Use feeding as an additional opportunity while searching nests, rather than budgeting a fixed number of feeds as a promised egg.
When you find a useful nest area, add a named map Stamp. Farm Animals now appear on the map too, making it easier to distinguish an animal location from a place you still want to search.
Make happiness a production decision
The 1.0 thresholds and daily outputs are:
| State | Needs met | Daily resource output |
|---|---|---|
| Unhappy | Below Content’s threshold | 0 |
| Content | At least 2 | 1 |
| Happy | At least 4 | 3 |
Open the animal’s status and deal with its unmet needs instead of assuming that owning a larger number of animals guarantees more output. Improving one animal from Content to Happy changes its stated daily output from one resource to three. That can be a more manageable project than adding more animals whose needs you cannot yet satisfy.
Use the animal’s current status to check whether the care arrangement worked. A trough or enclosure existing nearby is not itself proof that the animal’s needs are being met. Recheck the status after changing the setup.
Petting and daily drops are related but distinct
Petting a Happy farm animal makes it drop its resource immediately, once per day per animal. The release notes separately list the happiness-based daily output and the immediate petting behavior. Use the daily petting action and watch the actual resource drop; do not multiply the daily total again based on an assumed extra stack size.
A practical care round is: locate the animal, inspect its needs, address the missing ones, confirm Happy status, then pet it and collect the result. Repeat for each animal supplying a resource needed by your current delivery or fertilizer production.
Connect ranching to the rest of the farm
Animal resources feed into deliveries and into Mulch/Fertilizer production. The 1.0 crafting rework uses Powder items made from droppings or wood. Before expanding the ranch, inspect which ingredient in your current recipe is actually scarce.
If you have plenty of crops but are waiting for an animal product, improving care can advance the delivery faster than another field. If animal resources are accumulating unused, check whether processing or a locked recipe is the real obstacle.
See the Mulch and Fertilizer guide for the distinction between changing a Mound’s type and increasing its yield.
Unlock breeding through Diane
Ranch animal breeding is a 1.0 mechanic unlocked through Diane’s questline. Follow that neighbor progression when looking for breeding; reaching a generic milestone number alone is not the documented unlock path.
Keep working from the active quest requirements rather than importing breeding combinations or incubation numbers from an older guide. The important progression distinction is that finding an egg, caring for farm animals and unlocking breeding are separate steps.
Recover a missing animal
Farm animals no longer run away simply because they are Unhappy. Lost farm animals turn up at Diane’s sanctuary after a day. Check the map markers and sanctuary instead of immediately replacing a missing animal.
The 1.0 notes also fix distant animals falling through the world and several fence-escape loopholes. If disappearance continues, check the current build and the animal’s status before changing the entire care setup. For a lost trailer or item cache, use Lola’s different retrieval service described in the exploration guide.
