Stardew Valley Hardwood guide: Secret Woods route and Mahogany trees

Get renewable Hardwood, find the two hidden Secret Woods stumps, grow Mahogany trees and plan the 200 Hardwood needed for Willy’s boat.

Coverage: 1.6 · unmodded

The quick answer

Upgrade to a Steel Axe to open the Secret Woods. Its six daily stumps supply 12 Hardwood: four are in the upper clearing and two are below the tree line. Plant and fertilize Mahogany Seeds alongside this daily route to build a larger reserve.

Choose a source you can actually renew

The first stumps and fallen logs on a farm are useful startup supplies. On most farm maps, clearing them once does not create a daily Hardwood route. For a dependable supply, open the Secret Woods and start a Mahogany plot while you collect from its stumps.

Source Tool or access requirement Output and repeatability
Large Stump Copper Axe or better Hardwood; the six Secret Woods stumps regrow daily
Large Log Steel Axe or better Hardwood; clearing the entrance log opens the Secret Woods
Mahogany Tree Any Axe 8–13 Hardwood from a mature tree; replant for another harvest
Forest Farm stumps Copper Axe or better Eight daily stumps, supplying 16 Hardwood
Four Corners Farm stump Copper Axe or better One daily stump in the northwest section, supplying 2 Hardwood

The distinction between Copper and Steel matters: Copper handles a stump, but it cannot clear the large log blocking the normal Secret Woods entrance. Tool upgrades must proceed in order. Clint keeps the tool through the intervening day; collect it on the second day after handing it in. Finish any urgent chopping before the handover.

Walk the full Secret Woods loop

Enter Cindersap Forest south of the farm and head to its northwest corner. Clear the large log with the Steel Axe. Bring the Axe, a weapon for the Slimes and enough inventory room for Hardwood and seeds.

  1. Enter the woods and cut the four stumps in the upper clearing.
  2. Find the covered passage through the trees just southeast of the upper cluster of three stumps. Walk south through the concealed opening.
  3. Cut the two additional stumps in the lower clearing.
  4. Return through the opening, or use the other covered passage south of the entrance. That route bends south, west, then south rather than following one straight line.
  5. Keep any Mahogany Seeds and return on another day when the six stumps have respawned.

Collecting only eight Hardwood usually means you found the four upper stumps and missed the lower two. The full daily set supplies twelve. This is a route through fixed renewable stumps, not a promise that every loose tree or forage item respawns overnight.

If you also need a Woodskip for the Community Center, bring your fishing rod and use the pond while here. See the bundle fish schedule for the catch conditions.

Grow a Mahogany reserve while making the daily trip

Mahogany Seeds can come from mature Mahogany trees, large stumps and logs, or Slimes in the Secret Woods. Plant the seeds instead of selling the first few. This gives the daily route a second purpose: gathering immediate Hardwood while establishing a future harvest at home.

At Foraging level 7, Tree Fertilizer becomes craftable using 5 Fiber and 5 Stone. Apply it to the planted seed or sapling, not to an empty tile. Fertilized Mahogany has a 60% chance per night to advance a growth stage, compared with 15% without fertilizer. It can grow in winter when fertilized.

Do not schedule a construction payment around every tree finishing on one fixed date. Mahogany growth is probabilistic even with fertilizer. Plant several, keep the gathering loop running and harvest mature trees as they become available. A tapped Mahogany produces Sap, not Hardwood; chopping is the Hardwood route.

Work backward from the boat repair

Willy’s boat requires 200 Hardwood, alongside 5 Iridium Bars and 5 Battery Packs. If you start with none and rely only on twelve Hardwood from the Secret Woods each day, you need 17 complete visits: 16 × 12 = 192, while 17 × 12 = 204. Existing stock, Mahogany harvests and farm-map stumps shorten that plan.

Reserve the boat stack separately from materials for machines and buildings. Otherwise a succession of useful small crafts can keep postponing the same repair. You can plan the other bottleneck using the Battery Pack guide, then follow the boat unlock and island route when the mainland requirement is complete.

Why the supply is not growing

Problem Likely cause Fix
Axe will not remove the entrance obstruction It is a large log, not a stump Finish the Steel upgrade
Only four stumps found Lower clearing overlooked Follow a covered southern passage
Planted Mahogany is slow Each growth step is random Fertilize and grow several trees in parallel
No Hardwood from the Tapper Tapping and chopping have different products Cut mature Mahogany for Hardwood
The boat stack keeps shrinking Other projects consume the same reserve Separate committed repair materials from everyday crafting stock
