Stardew Valley bundle fish guide: five easy-to-miss weather and time windows

Plan Catfish, Eel, Sturgeon, Walleye and Pufferfish catches with exact ordinary fishing windows, a rainy-day route and rod choices.

Coverage: 1.6 · unmodded · standard bundles

The quick answer

Check season, weather, water and time together. In spring rain, try the river for Catfish before moving to the ocean for Eel after 4pm. Save Summer or Winter lake time for Sturgeon and a rainy fall afternoon for Walleye.

Four conditions must match before you cast

A fish can be absent because of the season, weather, location or clock. A better rod does not override an ordinary catch window. Before spending a day at the wrong water, check all four conditions and identify the exact fish you are trying to donate.

The table below targets five standard Community Center fish that often disrupt an otherwise complete plan. These are ordinary, unmodded mainland fishing conditions without Magic Bait or special weather workarounds. It is not a list of every fish in the game.

The five windows to put on your calendar

Fish Standard bundle Ordinary location Season Weather Time
Catfish River Fish River Spring or Fall Rain 6am–midnight
Eel Night Fishing Ocean Spring or Fall Rain 4pm–2am
Sturgeon Lake Fish Mountain Lake Summer or Winter Any 6am–7pm
Walleye Night Fishing River, Mountain Lake or forest pond Fall Rain Noon–2am
Pufferfish Specialty Fish Ocean Summer Sunny Noon–4pm

“Forest pond” here means the pond in Cindersap Forest, not any water on the player’s farm. Catfish have additional Secret Woods and Witch’s Swamp possibilities, including summer rain; the river row gives the simpler early route. Winter Walleye require a weather workaround such as a Rain Totem, so do not treat a normal winter visit as equivalent to fall rain.

The standard bundle needs the fish, not a gold-quality catch unless the slot explicitly says otherwise. Put the first donation in storage. Selling it because you expect another rainy afternoon is a gamble on both weather and your ability to land a second one.

Use one spring rain day for two jobs

Start at the river for Catfish after farm chores. Its window is much longer than the Eel’s early-day availability, which does not begin until 4pm. Leave enough travel time to reach the ocean as that second window opens. Once you have the needed donation, switch targets rather than spending the whole day duplicating the first fish.

In fall rain, Walleye adds another option from noon onward. Decide which missing donation matters most before traveling. If you still struggle with Catfish, a successful Walleye or Eel donation can be more useful than losing every cast against the hardest target.

For Pufferfish, arrive at the beach before noon with the rod equipped and inventory space available. The four-hour ordinary window is short. A rainy summer day is not a substitute for the sunny condition in the table.

Buy a rod for the feature you need

The Training Rod costs 25g and provides a beginner-friendly bar equivalent to Fishing level 5 when your own level is lower. It is restricted to easier catches and takes neither bait nor tackle. Use it to learn the controls and build skill; do not take it as the tool for every difficult bundle fish above.

The Fiberglass Rod costs 1,800g and becomes available at Fishing level 2. It accepts bait but not tackle. The Iridium Rod costs 7,500g and requires Fishing level 6; it accepts both. Buying Fiberglass helps the bait workflow, but does not unlock the tackle slot you may be expecting.

If the fish repeatedly escapes after biting, look at control, fishing level and tackle options. If nothing relevant bites despite many casts, recheck the table’s conditions before blaming your minigame technique. These are different failures with different solutions.

Control the bar instead of chasing every movement

Short presses make small corrections; a long held press builds upward movement. Try to keep room above and below the fish rather than repeatedly throwing the bar from one end of the gauge to the other. Near the bottom, avoid a hard uncontrolled drop that makes the bar bounce away from the fish.

Practice this on easier catches outside a rare weather window. A rainy Catfish session is a poor place to learn both basic control and the day’s travel plan at once. Return with the best equipment you can reasonably afford, food if you use a fishing buff, and a clear donation target.

Check the donation before ending the trip

Store or deliver the required fish before selling the rest. If a fish is already donated, update the next day’s target so that the same species does not keep consuming your limited weather windows.

The seasonal bundle plan puts these catches alongside crop and forage deadlines. Fishing is one branch of that route; it should not cause you to miss the Green Bean or Cauliflower you still need at home.
