The quick answer
Place a Tapper on a mature Oak Tree. A normal Tapper produces Oak Resin after 7 nights; a Heavy Tapper takes 3. Oak Trees grow from Acorns—Maple Trees and Pine Trees make different products.

Start with the tree, not the machine
Oak Resin is the product of tapping an Oak Tree. If your Tapper keeps producing Maple Syrup or Pine Tar, waiting longer will not turn that output into Resin: the tree is the wrong species. Planting an Acorn gives you a reliable way to identify your future Oak Tree.
You can also tap a suitable mature Oak already growing outside the farm, such as one in Cindersap Forest. Put the tree on a regular travel route so collecting it does not become a separate daily journey. Avoid cutting down a productive tapped tree while clearing ordinary Wood.
Craft and place the Tapper
The normal Tapper recipe unlocks at Foraging level 4 and uses 40 Wood plus 2 Copper Bars. Place it on a mature tree and return when the product icon is ready. Collect the product to keep the production routine moving.
| Tree | Seed used to grow it | Normal Tapper cycle | Product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | Acorn | 7 nights | Oak Resin |
| Maple | Maple Seed | 9 nights | Maple Syrup |
| Pine | Pine Cone | 5 nights | Pine Tar |
These are different ingredients, not quality tiers of one item. All three ordinary tree species continue producing through winter. A fruit tree cannot take a Tapper. Mushroom Trees have their own seasonal behavior, so do not use their winter result to diagnose a tapped Oak.
If you placed the machine on the wrong tree, hit the Tapper once with an Axe or Pickaxe to remove it, then reuse it on the correct tree. Keep bombs away from the tapping area: a blast can destroy both the machine and its contents.
Build a small Oak plantation before expanding Kegs
A Keg needs 30 Wood, 1 Copper Bar, 1 Iron Bar and 1 Oak Resin, with its recipe learned at Farming level 8. Mining more metal will not solve a Resin shortage. Start the tapping supply while you are still collecting the other ingredients.
For ten new Kegs, set aside 300 Wood, 10 Copper Bars, 10 Iron Bars and 10 Oak Resin. If you also build ten normal Tappers from scratch, those machines add 400 Wood and 20 Copper Bars. The combined setup is therefore 700 Wood, 30 Copper Bars and 10 Iron Bars, before considering seed growth or the ten Resin you must wait to collect. This is a planning calculation from the two recipes, not an extra recipe in the game.
Ten producing Oaks can provide ten Resin in one completed normal Tapper cycle. Five Oaks need two cycles to supply the same quantity. Neither estimate includes growing the trees, a delayed collection or losing a machine. Start with the amount you can collect regularly rather than buying into an oversized workshop that cannot be supplied.
Speed up tree establishment and later production separately
Tree Fertilizer accelerates the tree’s growth; it does not shorten a Tapper’s cycle. Fertilized Oaks mature in five days, including winter. The recipe requires Foraging level 7 and uses 5 Fiber plus 5 Stone per application. Plant the Acorn first, then apply the fertilizer.
The Heavy Tapper changes production time once the tree is mature. Its recipe costs 20 Qi Gems in Qi’s Walnut Room and each machine uses 30 Hardwood and 1 Radioactive Bar. On Oak, the cycle is three nights. This is a late-game upgrade: it is not necessary to start making Kegs, and it introduces different material requirements.
Choose the intervention that matches the delay. Empty ground needs seeds and growing time; mature Oaks without machines need Tappers; a working small plantation may simply need more trees to feed a larger workshop.
Keep the first Resin donations separate
Oak Resin is required for the standard Enchanter’s Bundle and is an option in Exotic Foraging. If you intend to use it for both, reserve separate items instead of allocating the same first Resin to two donations and a Keg.
After that, decide whether the next piece belongs in a new machine or should wait for another unlock. The Keg versus Preserves Jar guide compares processing choices; the Greenhouse layout guide explains the crop supply that can keep a later wine workshop busy.
